šŸ—³ļø ā€œThe Return of Poole?ā€ Town Council Back on the Table

Big changes could be on the way for local democracy. BCP Council is proposing to create Poole Town Council and and a brand-new Broadstone Town Council – and residents are being asked to have their say.

Under the proposals, Poole would become a parished area, covering most of the neighbourhoods in the old Poole Borough (like Hamworthy, Parkstone, Oakdale, Canford Heath and more). It would have its own Poole Town Council, made up of 42 elected councillors focused solely on local issues.

At the same time, Broadstone could form its own Broadstone Town Council, with 10 councillors representing the community across two wards.

These new councils would sit beneath BCP Council, handling smaller local services – like community events, public spaces, and town promotions – and would be funded by a small addition to council tax.

The idea is to bring decision-making closer to the people who live here.

The consultation is now open until 31 May 2025, and it’s your chance to support, oppose, or suggest changes to the plans.

Now, if only Poole had a suitable building where a council could be based…

šŸŽŸ Bournemouth Pier Toll Scrapped for 2025

Local residents can now enjoy Bournemouth Pier for free all year round. Adventure Attractions, in partnership with BCP Council, has suspended the pier toll for 2025. It’s a move to support locals during tough times—just show proof of address. A small charge may apply for tourists during peak periods, but for residents, the view is on the house.

šŸ Poole Cricket Club Swings Into the Season

Cricket is back, and Poole Cricket Club is ready to roll! The new season starts 3 May, and everyone’s welcome—whether you're a seasoned player or just curious. Outdoor nets begin Thursday 24 April at 6:30pm, so now’s the time to dust off your bat and join the team. Message the club to get involved.

The Great Tail Trail has launched!

Actor and Julia’s House patron Martin Clunes was at the launch this weekend, meeting the artists and families behind the trail’s most meaningful designs. One of the 45 giant mermaid tail sculptures was created by local artist Judith Opsblum and inspired by 18-year-old Annabelle Hover, who was cared for by Julia’s House before she passed away in January. Her younger brother Robbie, who also lives with Juvenile Batten Disease, helped Judith shape the sculpture’s unique, tactile design.

Judith’s sculpture, Footprints in the Sand, includes Braille inscriptions and beach textures designed to be experienced by touch as well as sight. It’s also covered in foot and paw prints – symbolising precious beach memories shared by families and their pets.

ā€œJulia’s House is a lifeline for families like the Hovers,ā€ said Martin. ā€œEvery time I visit, I’m amazed by the love, care and fun that fills the hospice. It’s a truly special place.ā€

The trail runs until 1 June and is free to explore. Download the app to collect tails, unlock rewards and support Julia’s House. Find your favourite, share your photos, and help raise vital funds for local families.

From Friday 25th to Sunday 27th April, the town centre will be buzzing with workshops, talks, live performances and activities celebrating writers and storytellers of all kinds. Whether you’re an aspiring author, a casual scribbler, or someone who just loves a good story—this is your invitation to get involved.

Now in its third year, the Bournemouth Writing Festival brings together published authors, poets, journalists, and creative professionals from across the UK for a long weekend of inspiration, learning and community. But it’s not just for writers—this year’s programme is packed with free family-friendly events and live evening performances, so there’s something for everyone.

Bringing the Kids? Head to Patch (1st floor of Bobby’s) on Saturday 26th April for free, drop-in writing activities, games, and creativity led by ArtfulScribe and Authentic Education. There’ll also be a range of ticketed workshops for children, all run by experienced facilitators—and parents go free!

You’ll find poets leading fun, creative drop-ins for all ages from 10am to 5pm. No experience needed—just drop in and give it a go.

Looking for something different in the evening? There are two standout events you’ll want in the diary:
